For the correct diagnosis of pneumonia, diagnostic imaging methods must be correlated with the patient’s clinical presentation (medical history and adequate anamnesis). Although the current gold standard for diagnosis is a suggestive chest X-ray combined with the patient’s clinical findings, two other highly useful methods—CT and ultrasound—are increasingly used in current clinical practice. It is worth noting that not all consolidations observed on imaging are caused by pneumonia, as other causes such as pulmonary infarction, lung neoplasms, or atelectasis exist, making it important to differentiate between these terms.
