Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia; it is a degenerative and multifactorial disease, dynamic rather than static, meaning that every patient with paroxysmal AF progresses to persistent or even permanent AF. For this reason, timely identification is essential. Atrial fibrillation causes atrial remodeling, which perpetuates the condition. It is often neither identified nor correctly diagnosed, and the cost of care for its complications is very high. It can be prevented with anticoagulants, antiarrhythmic drugs, ablation, or cardioversion.
