Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder and has negative repercussions on the quality of life and work productivity of those who suffer from it. New interventions have been developed to individualize treatment, such as dietary modifications and the use of different psychotherapy techniques. A literature review was conducted to present new advances in IBS management and to provide an overview of the pathophysiology for a better understanding of the use of new therapies. In conclusion, IBS is a complex condition that requires a specialized and multidisciplinary approach, which is not accessible to the entire population. Furthermore, new interventions require further studies to identify medium- and long-term adverse effects.
