ELEVATION OF THE WIDTH OF ERYTHROCYTE DISTRIBUTION AS A RISK FACTOR FOR DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Objective: To determine if increased erythrocyte distribution width (RDW) is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. Materials and methods: A retrospective, analytical case-control study was carried out; in 128 patients with type 2 diabetes, 64 with diabetic retinopathy and 64 without it, who were treated at Hospital I of Florencia de Mora. We took into account covariates such as age, sex and glycated hemoglobin, as well as comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetic nephropathy and heart failure. The odds ratio (OR) with its 95% confidence interval was calculated by bivariate and multivariate analysis, and associations were considered significant if the p value < 0.05. Results: There is a significant relationship between elevated erythrocyte distribution width (RDW) and diabetic retinopathy (p= 0.08, OR: 2.605, 95% CI: 1.276 – 5.320). The intervening variables such as arterial hypertension, diabetic nephropathy and heart failure did not show statistically significant associations with retinopathy (p=0.423, 0.257, 0.225 respectively). Conclusion:
Elevated erythrocyte distribution width (RDW) is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy.
