Abstract

Malabsorption is defined as congenital defects in membrane transport to enterocytes or a reduction in the area of absorption, unlike maldigestion that corresponds to alterations in the intestinal lumen or in the brush border membrane. For practical purposes, the malabsorption syndrome is the consequence of a set of pathologies both outside and inside the enterocyte and/or a failure in the nutrient cleavage mechanism that causes these anomalies.
