Previously, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) was considered as a single disease, but with the passage of time it was discovered that it actually corresponds to a group of diseases. Currently, the correct definition is: “a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia, resulting from a defect in insulin secretion, desuaction, or both”. Its pathophysiology involves multiple mechanisms: lipolysis, glucagon secretion, incretin effect, among others; which characterizes it as a heterogeneous disease (each case is different). Therefore, the importance of knowing the multiple phenotypes of DM lies in the establishment of an appropriate therapeutic plan for the patient.
