Dermatology is a medical specialty often underestimated and mistakenly associated only with aesthetic treatments such as Botox or acne care. However, it encompasses over 3,000 diseases affecting not only the skin but also its appendages (hair, nails, and mucous membranes). Despite its breadth, general medical education in dermatology is often insufficient, limiting non-specialist physicians in their ability to accurately diagnose and treat skin conditions.
This field not only addresses visible issues but also plays a key role in detecting underlying systemic diseases such as liver failure, gastric cancer, or tuberculosis. Moreover, many dermatologic conditions, though not life-threatening, have a significant psycho-emotional impact—such as acne, vitiligo, or universal alopecia areata. On the other hand, diseases like psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, or toxic epidermal necrolysis can be life-threatening and require intensive care.
Recognizing the integral value of dermatology is essential for delivering comprehensive and compassionate medical care.
