Abstract

Shock is defined as a state of tissue hypoperfusion, which implies that the organs are not adequately receiving blood. There is an imbalance between the supply and demand for oxygen: the demand exceeds the supply, since the amount of oxygen entering the body is insufficient, resulting in inadequate diffusion of oxygen. With the tissue suffering caused by hypoxia, a compensatory mechanism occurs in which aerobic metabolism is set aside and opts for anaerobic metabolism, with production of reactive substances of oxygen, nitric oxide and interleukins that cause damage to the body.
